About this trip

There are places you visit, and then there are places that change you. Three hours upstream through the deep veins of the Shiripuno River, there is a corner of the Amazon where time isn’t measured in hours, but in heartbeats and ancient roots.

We invite you on a 5-day expedition into the heart of the Waorani territory of Apaika. This isn’t a hotel; it’s your temporary home in tent camps beneath the jungle canopy. This isn’t just a hike; it’s a masterclass in survival led by the guardians of the curare. From the whisper of ethnobotanical medicine to the age-old art of Amazonian fishing, this is far from a standard tourist’s return to what’s essential.

Are you ready to leave the noise behind and answer the call of the water at the Waorani Waterfall?

Our story begins in El Coca, where the pavement finally gives way to the vast, emerald wilderness. After crossing the Auca road, the bridge over the Shiripuno River welcomes us as the gateway to an ancient world. We begin a three-hour upstream navigation—a journey deep into the veins of the Amazon while enjoying a canned box lunch on board.

Upon arriving at the Apaika Waorani Community, we’ll set up camp and pitch the tents that will be our home for the week. After some downtime to soak in the surroundings, we’ll head out at sunset for our first trek to the Apaika Lagoon, immersing ourselves in the stunning diversity of the local flora and wildlife.

The morning sun filters through the canopy, reminding us that life here is earned through respect and skill. We embark on a long-distance trek where Waorani guides teach us their ancestral hunting techniques and the use of Curare, their most lethal natural ally. Since the jungle trail will keep us busy well into the afternoon, we’ll carry a snack from the camp. We’ll return to the community after midday, tired but filled with new knowledge. The afternoon is reserved for well-deserved rest before gathering around the night fire to hear legends of jaguar warriors brought to life by our hosts.

The morning reveals the jungle as a living pharmacy during our ethnobotanical hike. But Waorani life doesn’t just depend on the forest floor; in the afternoon, we take to the water for a new river expedition to learn traditional fishing techniques. Deep in the Amazonian rivers, we’ll discover how this community harmonizes its existence by drawing life from both the land and the water, mastering the art of fishing in deep, mysterious currents.

We start the morning with a 1.2-mile (2 km) trek through primary forest to discover the Apaika Waterfall. This hidden gem forms a small natural pool—a sanctuary of crystal-clear water perfect for recharging your spirit. Nearby, we’ll explore a small cave that serves as a home for fruit-eating bats, silent guardians essential for germinating the seeds of the Amazon rainforest.

After enjoying this paradise, we’ll head back to the community for a rewarding lunch. In the afternoon, the story turns into a celebration with a Waorani Cultural Demonstration, featuring the music, dances, and traditions that have stood the test of time.

After breaking down our temporary home in Apaika, we begin our return navigation, drifting downstream with the current of the Shiripuno. After three hours on the river, we’ll reach the bridge where a farewell snack awaits us a final taste of this land before starting the journey back to El Coca.
